SUMMER 2011/12 TRENDS
Hooray, summer is here at last! Well mostly here, what with the odd cold front still coming through and making us wonder whether we should be choosing that wonderful new floral dress or blouse that we have just purchased! Wear it anyway but just add a cardigan or light jacket to keep you warm when the wind picks up and you will soon be sporting it with just your new tan...
There are quite a few trends for this summer, but remember to only wear those which suit your figure and your personal colouring. It is no use choosing a chartreuse top if it does not suit your colouring – let the Springs or light Warms wear it with confidence and rather try another of the wonderful crayon box selection of colours to choose from if you have Cool colouring.
BRIGHTS – This includes Chartreuse, Cobalt Blue, Red, Watermelon, Orange, Hot Pink, Purple and Apple

DENIM – Denim is still a favourite for this summer. Choose from the whole spectrum of washes from deep and dark to bright or light. There is a large selection of tops, dresses, shorts and jeans in stores at the moment. Rather let the younger set wear the coloured jeans and stick to the traditional blues, grey, white or black for a more polished look.

WHITE – White dresses and white on white is always fresh for summer and this season is no exception. If you have small children, work outdoors or in a more hands-on environment then keep your whites for lazy weekend lunches, going out to the movies or for drinks. There are lovely white tops in all sorts of shapes in stores at the moment. Pair them with white wide legged linen pants, white capris, white short shorts or longer shorts, white jeans or a longer length white skirt.
METALICS – Silver, gold and bronze accessories are super when paired with denim or white. Try a pair of metallic strappy sandals, slip-ons or gladiator sandals. A bag or belt will also complete the look. Don’t be too matchy though – use different textures or one item can be shiny while the other should be in a matt finish.
NEUTRALS – Light Grey is great for Cools and Stone works well for Warms. They will compliment the other colours in your wardrobe.

COLOUR STRIPES – Anyone can wear stripes. If you are fuller figured then make sure that the stripes are unevenly spaced and of different widths to break you up visually.

FLORALS PRINTS – Large, small, bright, muted. All types of floral prints are in this season.

PRINTS IN GENERAL – Actually all sorts of prints are currant. Tribal, abstract, animal. If you normally go for plains, surprise yourself and choose a print. Be bold, be daring, be noticed!

MAXI DRESSES – Lovely and cool for summer. If you want to cover your upper arms and cannot find a dress with sleeves then opt for a little short sleeved cardigan to cover up in one of the colours in the print or which contrasts with or compliments a plain dress.

FULL SKIRTS – The 1950s silhouette is great for most figures and can hide a multitude of sins or enhance a smaller waist. It can make a column or rectangle shape look more curvaceous and it generally feels feminine to have that amount of fabric swishing around. The traditional length is to the knee or calf, but fuller, layered short skirts are great on younger girls and full maxi length works for eveningwear. If you are wearing a skirt then choose a more fitted top to balance the fullness of the skirt.

WIDE PANTS – All shapes of pants are still in this season – skinny, boyfriend, bootleg, Capri and flared. But a good relaxed style to choose, or try if you have not before, is a wider cut playing on the 1970s influence, which is still big. Choose light weight denim or linen for a softer, more fluid look. As with the full skirt, keep your top more fitted. A flowing top and wide bottom generally make you look bigger than you are. If you are short then wear a pair of heels with your wide legged pants to give your more height and keep you from looking dumpy. They are a wonderful option for pear shapes.

JUMPSUITS – Whether you get yourself a lovely long all-in-one outfit or a cute short playsuit, this is a high fashion piece. A black, long jumpsuit with metallic accessories is a sophisticated 70s look that most ladies could pull off. Team with flats, wedges or platforms. Floral or striped short playsuits with espadrilles, flats or gladiator sandals are better on the younger set.

SHORTS – Short shorts, mid thigh shorts or knee length shorts, depending on how much you love your legs and how old you are, are super for a more casual feel. Denim is great, but white, stone, khaki or black will also work well. Team with a bright, white, striped or floral top to bring in one of the other summer trends.

SHEER FABRICS AND LACE DETAILS – These evoke a light, romantic and sexy feel for
Summer. Just remember to pair your sheer top with a nude, coloured or black camisole to keep the look ladylike. Short sleeved cardigans and t shirts with crochet-like and delicate lace back details are plentiful this season.
Enjoy the sunshine and long days. Apply sunblock with a high SPF daily. Spoil yourself with al fresco lunches and dinners and enjoy a glass of white wine or bubbles with your food. If you don’t have a beach nearby then picnics at a dam or lake or even next to the swimming pool are part of the fun of summer. Make sure you always look your best, even if the occasion is casual, and the confidence that you feel will radiate from you. Of course the glow of a light tan also helps!
Until next time, have fun dressing up (or down). Feel great in one or two new items or “shop your wardrobe” and find new ways of wearing what you already own. Pair your turquoise dress with your purple cardigan or wear your orange t shirt with your green bag. Be adventurous. Be confident. And be stylish.
